My First Post! It seems like only yesterday… It was so shoddily done and simple that I have to edit it and expand upon some thoughts. Anyway, original movie night date – 13/02/19. Post date – 14/02/19.
Welcome to the first movie night! Tonights movies are the the 1954 classic movie ‘Creature From The Black Lagoon’ by Jack Arnold, followed by the freshly released 2019’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Bryan Singer.

Creature From The Black Lagoon – 1954 – Jack Arnold – 79 mins

I thoroughly enjoyed ‘Creature From The Black Lagoon’. I’ve always wanted to watch the classic movies associated with the Universal Pictures upcoming Dark Universe movies. This one was certainly not a disappointment. As mentioned, I am going to try read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein soon. I intend to do that before watching the black and white movie. Probably will leave it till the Halloween month scary movie time period.

One of the points that had me reminiscing was the soundtrack. I was brought up on a lot of Gerry Anderson shows like Stingray and Thunderbirds, and I was certainly getting a lot of those sorts of vibes from it. Maybe it was because the Gill Man as apparently the creature is named, reminds me of a Aquaphibian from Stingray too.

Spoiler, if you can even call it that; the ending is very abrupt. Not as abrupt as the movie ‘Gallipoli’ but not far from it. After a quick Googling, I see it has two sequels which answer what happens to the Gill Man afterwards. They will be put on the list to be watched another time. I also see that the movie was originally in anaglyph 3-D. I would be down to watch that too…now where can I find a pair of those glasses?

Bohemian Rhapsody – 2019 – Bryan Singer – 134 mins
‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is a film I love and connect with a lot, and since I had the preorder notification that morning, I couldn’t help but watch it. I love it for so many reasons. The moral of the story I get out of it is something I adore and the beginning is very inspiration. Just shows you how people can begin from little beginnings and rise to such awesome heights.
I remember the first time hearing ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ the song. That was around the time I was getting into “proper music” and leaving children’s songs and kids show’s soundtracks behind. I asked my mother what it was and I think she said I should know it and that it was a classic song. She wasn’t wrong. From there, I discovered more and more Queen songs. I remember trying to sing along to ‘We Are The Champions’ as a kid even though I didn’t know the words. I just liked the song. Whether it was from Singstar or that awesome ‘Shaun Of The Dead’ scene once they make it to the pub with ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’, Queen keeps popping up everywhere. Ah, good times…and who could forget that bad Crazy Frog version of ‘We Are The Champions’! And now we have an amazing Queen-ified version of the 20th Century Fox Fanfare. What an opening to a 20th Century Fox film! I haven’t seen one that good since ‘The Simpsons Movie’ and Ralph Wiggum doing it.

I had the privilege of seeing the remaining Queen members and Adam Lambert in Auckland in 2018. While I had to pay my sister back for the experience, it was worth every dollar! I thoroughly enjoyed it; Adam Lambert fits in very well with Brian May and Roger Taylor. It opened me up to a new favourite song I hadn’t been aquatinted with by Queen; ‘Stone Cold Crazy’. It was completely new to me and I love it. Just gave me a different view to Queen with how the song is. Brian May’s guitar solo of him being lifted into space by Frank the Robot (the name of the robot on the cover of ‘News Of The World’ you’ll see above) was amazing to watch.

Another reason I truly love this movie is I felt personal connection to the character of Mary Austin. I am sure the feeling goes deeper than this, but my favourite Queen song is ‘Love Of My Life’. It was nice to see the story of the song put onto the screen, even though my mother had told me about Mary before hand and the history of the song. Maybe its because of my beliefs in how men and women can be friends, and even soul mates. They may not be there for each other on the level of marriage, but they will always be there for each other no matter what. Give me time; I’ll figure out why I liked it so much.

I also didn’t know that there was a band before Queen! I like the song ‘Doin’ Alright’ by Smile; it reminds me of ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ by The Beatles. The film boosted my existing excitement for ‘Rocketman’, the upcoming biographical movie on Elton John. He is definitely another musician I admire for reasons that go beyond ‘Gnomeo And Juliet’. Another similar film, but not really similar film I am looking forward to is ‘Yesterday’. Watch the trailer; I love the idea of it and everything about it so far. But don’t watch it if you don’t like The Beatles, or maybe do. My sister doesn’t like them and she is opening up to the idea of seeing it. Overall, I loved this film for so many reasons. While it may not be chronologically accurate, the film spoke to me in a way I loved.
Closing Thoughts
Anyway, I don’t care if anyone reads this or not; I’m gonna keep doing this for me and if anyone reads it, thank you very much and let me know what you think. Still not decided on next week; I have one classic in mind, but still thinking on the favourite.

I’m glad you mentioned Mary – she was an important figure in Freddie’s life, for sure. And while many people believe that Freddie was gay, he did identify as bisexual (even if other people didn’t see him as such, or validate that identity), and so his relationship with Mary was absolutely genuine and significant to his life. Even though they didn’t end up getting married, it was obvious that Freddie loved her, and they both remained close friends, like you say. There are all kinds of love, each equally as powerful. Damn I wish Freddie were still alive because I’m sure he’d have so many interesting insights about these things… D:
